Brief Histroy
On 20 June 1993, the Government of the Republic of Slovenia established the Office for Women's Policy as a professional service responsible for the realisation of the rights of women guaranteed by the constitution, legislation and international treaties. By founding the Office, the Government committed itself to integrating the principle of gender equality into government policy and to eliminating inequality in all areas of life. The Office for Women's Policy, which began operating on July 1 1992, focused on analysis of the causes and reasons for the phenomenon of discrimination in individual areas, on improving legislation in terms of gender equality and on providing information on rights concerning women.
Under the Decision of the establishment, organisation and working areas of the Office for Equal Opportunities, the Office for Equal Opportunities took on the tasks of the Office for Women's Policy on 24 February 2001.
It is modelled on national machineries for gender equality in European countries and derives from commitments expressed on international level. Equal opportunities for women and men and the related social attention to women, who are still in a position of inequality, remain at the forefront of the operations of the Office for Equal Opportunities.
